HST Quilt Finish

It feels so good to share a quilt finish with you today! The last time I had an actual quilt to show off was in July, when I finished my baby nautical quilt.

I started this quilt one evening this summer because I was basically procrastinating working on my FAL Q3 list. The truth is, none of the projects on my list were really exciting me so I was playing with my fabric stash - re-organizing, sorting... you know!

And then I came across some leftover layer cake squares: a bunch of solid coloured squares, a little stack of white solid squares and about half a pack of black solid squares.  I thought it might be fun to pair the squares and make HSTs. Nothing complicated, no over thinking - just a lot of chain piecing and A LOT of trimming!!!

The next thing to do was to decide on a layout.  I really didn't want to over think the design of this thing, but I wanted to make sure I liked how the colours were going to be distributed.  So I stuck my flannel design wall to the dining room wall and asked my daughter and son to help out.

We had so much fun!!  When we were done and pleased with our layout, I took a picture and then started making little stacks for each row.  And those stacks sat on my sewing room table for a couple of weeks.

But during the month of August, little by little, stack by stack, I put together a quilt top and basted it.

When it came time to quilt this, I decided to try a quilting design I learned from Yvonne from Quilting Jetgirl's blog (she actually has a really nice video tutorial for it).

And once in a while, just to keep things interesting, I would throw in another design I learned recently (and now I can't remember where!).

I quilted the heck out of it - I used 9 bobbins in a 68" x 64" quilt and it took forever - and I love it!!

  1. Looks fabulous! I really like the black added in and the 'almost' separation of warm and cool colors.
