A Color Explosion Baby Quilt

Baby quilts are so much fun to make - they are usually fairly quick and don't take a lot of fabric. When I'm in the mood for a fast finish, a baby quilt is usually my go-to.

For my latest finish, I once again looked through my collection of Bonjour Quilts patterns and chose to make Color Explosion.

The pattern calls for 16 fat quarters in cool and warm colours (8 of each). My stash of fat quarters has dwindled over the last few months and I haven't replenished it yet so my choices were somewhat limited. But I did manage to find 16 fat quarters that I think work well enough together.

Piecing a large number of HSTs and then trimming them all isn't something I usually enjoy, but in this case, it was almost a stress-reliever after a long day working.

For the quilting, I needed something just as simple so I went with a square meander. I used a blue variegated Aurifil thread which I knew would blend in well on the backing I chose for the quilt.

The binding is a scrappy one I prepared for another quilt. I thought it would look good on this one instead.

The details:
  • Pattern: Color Explosion by Bonjour Quilts
  • Size: 36" x 48"
  • Fabrics: 16 fat quarters from my stash
  • Thread: Pieced with Aurifil #2600 (dove) and quilted with Aurifil #4663 (blue variegated)

And another baby quilt added to the pile...

  1. Beautiful finish! The fat quarters do indeed work well together, and I really like the boxy meander. :)

  3. What a lovely quilt - a great use of those fat quarters that do go together very well. I know what you mean about making and trimming HSTs. Sometimes it can be a bit of a chore other times making HSTs has a soothing rhythm.
