Mountainside Quilt Finish

For some reason, I always doubt myself when it comes to putting fabrics together to make quilts. I relied on pre-cuts for such a long time where you get a little bit of fabric from an entire collection, that I don't feel like I built up my skills for pulling fabrics.

This quilt pattern however, requires 19 fat quarters and one accent fabric. I had a fat quarter bundle of the Twenty-Three collection by Eric & Julie Comstock for Moda but knew I'd need to add a few fat quarters from my stash. I looked at one of the prints from the collection and then pulled some grey, pink and yellow fabrics from my stash and I think it worked out all right!

I used some Kona Black as the accent - I really wanted the contrast and Kona Tangerine for the binding which is almost a perfect match for the orange in the Twenty-Three prints.

The backing is another vintage sheet from the basement.

I couldn't decide how to quilt it and went back and forth a few times between an all-over FMQ design such as a boxy meander and straight-line quilting to echo the "mountain peaks". In the end, I went with a big meander avoiding the black peaks, thinking I would come back and stitch those with black thread. I used a yellow thread (Aurifil #2135 in 50 wt) and never went back with the black!

The pattern is by Bonjour Quilts - I've been on a bit of a Bonjour Quilts kick lately (you should see a couple more of the patterns all done up here very soon!) Her patterns are just so much fun, really well written and make for beautiful quilt finishes!

The details:
  • Pattern: Mountainside Quilt by Bonjour Quilts
  • Size: 68" x 79"
  • Fabrics: Twenty-Three by Eric & Julie Comstock for Moda, fat quarters from my stash and some Kona Black and Kona Tangerine (binding)
  • Thread: Pieced with Aurifil #2600 (Dove) and quilted with Aurifil #2315 (Yellow) in 50 wt

  2. This looks great! I think you did a fine job pulling fabrics. It does take some practice, doesn't it?

  3. You did a great job pulling fabrics. I wouldn't have known it wasn't all a collection if you hadn't mentioned it. :)

  4. I think your fabric selections are spot on! It's a lovely bright quilt and the snow makes a perfect backdrop for you photos!
Last year I did the Quilter's Color Quest run by Rachel Hauser over on her blog, Stitched in Color. It helped me understand my colour choices - even made me feel a bit uncomfortable at times as we tackled emotion and colour - but has left me feeling a lot more confident about fabric choices.
