Pink and Orange for Kat

I've got a fun finish to share today and it's another super-sized one (I wrote about my super-sized Spiraled last week).  About a year ago, I read this blog post on the Sew Mama Sew website and loved the colours as well as the design of this mini so much, I saved it.

When I purchased a bundle of Amanda Jean Nyberg's Good Neighbors fabric collection, I remembered that blog post and decided I needed to use my new fabric on a blown-up version of that mini quilt.

The original size of the design is 24" square so I multiplied the size by 3.  In my version, each block is 12" x 18", making the finished size 72" square.

I added some Michael Miller fat quarters to my Good Neighbors bundle along with other fabrics I had in my stash.  I just love the end result.  The colours are bright, but everything just works so nicely together thanks to the grey and the white.

I pieced the backing with a bunch of fabrics I had in my stash and the binding is a lot of pink, orange and grey scraps I had.

For the quilting, I went with straight lines - some of them about 1" apart and others only about 1/4" apart.  I really like the texture it's giving the quilt.

You can't really tell in the pictures because the difference is extremely subtle, but I used a different colour of thread in each of the columns - white, grey, pink and orange.  It isn't glaring, but it adds a little bit of interest to the quilt when you look at it in person.

As soon as this quilt is washed and dried, it's going to live with my friend Kat who's moving soon and has been through a bit of a tough time lately.  I'm hoping the bright and happy colours will put a big smile on her face.

This is project number 6 on my Q1 FAL list.  I'm really excited about all of the WIPs I'm finally getting done!  Yay!

I will also be linking up at Crazy Mom Quilts for Finish It Up Friday and at Jennifer's for TGIFF.

  12. I love this!! That texture one the quilting is so fun! I'll have to try that. I love the subtle thread change. I did that once and it creates movement without being in your face. Great finish!
