Easy Charm Squares Quilt Finish

At the start of 2020, one of my goals for the year was to re-organize my sewing room. If you've been following my blog for a bit, you'll know that I started garment sewing and I now feel like I need to get better organized - fabric is all over the place in my sewing room and I need to find a storage solution for all the Big 4 and the PDF patterns I've acquired.

I was going through my stash of precuts and I realized I still have A LOT of charm square packs - some of which I'm really not in love with (I got them in a subscription from a few years ago). I now have plans to make a bunch of charity quilts with those squares. And this easy quilt is the first one.

I used a tutorial/pattern from Coral & Co which I had pinned a long time ago. It only took a few hours to cut and piece everything together. I then used a sheet for the backing so no piecing required for the back! I have a pile of top sheets that I use from time to time for quilt backs. The hubby and I don't use the top sheet when we purchase sets - we prefer using just our duvet - so I keep the top sheet for my quilting. You can see the backing I used at the top of the photo below. It matches the charm squares I used almost perfectly.

I wanted the quilting to be quick and easy as well so went with my usual wavy lines with the walking foot and used a soft pink thread which blends in on the back but shows up quite nicely on the Kona Charcoal background fabric.

When it came time to bind the quilt, I realized after stitching most of it down to the front that it wasn't long enough - not sure how I miscalculated the length I needed - so used a few binding leftover strips I had on hand instead of cutting another strip of the grey fabric. It's not exactly the same shade of pink, but I kind of like it.

Overall, this was a very satisfying make: I used up a couple of charm packs that had been languishing in my stash for years and it was really quick and easy.

  1. Great finish. Sometimes a simple pattern ends up being so striking. I like the pink thread and binding.

  3. We don't use top sheets, either, so it's super affirming to hear that others are like us (our families think we are crazy, ha)! The sheet matches the prints on the front so well, and I like the gray fabric for pulling all the charm squares together.

  5. Cute finish! I like the pink thread against the gray sashing. I'm working on an I Spy quilt with Kona Steel and I will remember the nice contrast.

  6. What a fun finish! I love that you used a sheet. I've only used a sheet once and it worked like a charm (and was super soft!). These prints paired with the gray is just perfection!
