Finished Cross Check Mini

Last year, I focused on sewing my stash, including my scraps and was pretty successful with it. I'm trying to continue using what I have on hand this year and that includes making the patterns I purchased over the years.

A mini quilt I finished last week was made with one of the patterns I purchased a few months ago from Yvonne at Quilting Jetgirl.

Although it doesn't look square in this picture, it actually is!!
Cross Check is super fun and quick! I went with two solids and one print because those were all big enough scrap pieces.

I used my walking foot to quilt straight lines echoing the piecing but left the medium blue unquilted so that it appeared a little bit poofy.

A tried to choose fabric for the binding, but with the design of this mini, nothing I had really looked good and pretty much everything I tried interfered with the design. So I decided to learn and new technique and face the quilt instead.  It was not my favourite method, but I really do love how it looks.

I used this tutorial to learn how to do a faced binding and it was really clear and easy to follow.

Stats:
  • Pattern: Cross Check Mini by Yvonne at Quilting Jetgirl
  • Size: 24" square
  • Fabrics: Kona Algeria, Kona Ocean and some scraps from backing fabrics I had on hand
  • Thread: Pieced with Aurifil #2600 (light grey) in 50 wt, quilted with Aurifil #2021 (white) in 50 wt and #2780 (royal blue) in 50 wt

This is finish number 2 on my Q1 2018 FAL list. I will also be linking up at Crazy Mom Quilts for Finish it Up Friday and at Devoted Quilter for TGIFF.

  3. I think facing is a perfect way to finish this quilt and help extend the illusion that the stripes are continuing out into space!

  6. Kudos for honoring prior purchases! I do that, as well. Even when I no longer love something, I really enjoy revisiting what Past Me was drawn to. Love that floral backing for this mini.
